Dovestone Reservoir is the place I taught myself how to get around outdoors on my own. When I first ventured out on longer walks to explore the Peak District, it was always starting from here. Up onto the moors and walk out as far as I dared... then turn around and head back toward the edges where I could see the reservoirs again! It was the perfect spot to learn, even though it was nowhere near the closest part of the Peak District to home. The looming crest of dark jagged rocks named Wimberry Stones it what pulled me in! I walked up to that spot many times, then around to Chew Reservoir and then down at Dean Rocks, or vice versa. After I learned to spread out into new places I felt I'd ran the whole expanse dry. Apart from one family walk about 5 years ago around the reservoir at ground level, I haven't been here to walk for nearly 9 years! Then after lockdown 'Dovestones' became "The amazing scenic place you just wouldn't believe on the edge of Manchester" in all the news websites once we were allowed out again. And it turned the whole place into a write off for me! But since starting these videos I thought, why not bob back on weekdays when it's quiet here and there, and pick up a few of the old basic routes? I'm so glad I did because somehow I forgot how massive the whole place is. Granted it's still a hotspot for the forseeable future, but so long as you can get yourself near enough to start walking, there's so many fantastic sights and views contained in a very easy to access place. I'll likely be back here again to pick up more quiet walks in other directions, but I'll start with the classic... Wimberry Stones! Then along the edges to Chew Reservoir and down the very simple, but very scenic, Chew Road.. Starting from Dovestone Reservoir itself, we'll be off up the front of Wimberry Rocks Brow, which has also increasingly become 'Chew Peace Plantation'. A memorial site for life-for-a-life trees.. it sounds a little off putting at first I know, but as you'll see it's becoming a very nice place to walk through... even without going further up! We'll work our way up the boulder field past some of the climbing/bouldering highlights and taking in the odd sweeping view. I had a pop at some of these a few years ago now when I was more into rock climbing... it was freezing :-D Once we've had enough of the steep leg burner that is Ram's Clough, we'll be doing a good scour of the rocks from on top. I do take my time on here so if you're interested in the rocks you should get a good look. But feel free to zip along a few minutes if you just want the view from up top! It was another windy one, so expect some heavily toned down wind sounds and wobbly heather bushes as we start the long walk along the Chew Valley Edge. It's fairly straightforward from here, but there are plenty of interesting boulder and rocks clinging onto the edge to be climbed on or walked around. After a very undulated walk we'll arrive at Chew Reservoir! Once Britain's highest reservoir.. but is alas no longer... but that doesn't take from the gorgeous bleak site. If you're feeling fit you can walk along the side of this reservoir and bob out right by Laddow Rocks in Crowden! I did a walk from there recently and finished at the other end of Chew... you could tie these videos together for a better idea: • PEAK DISTRICT - Peaceful Autumn Valley Wal... But today we're stopping here for a scenic break then heading right back down Chew valley road. As mundane as it sounds it a very nice walk back to the bottom with some excellent views of the rocks with zero chance of getting lost! Just before the end we'll be deviating over to part of the old tramway that was used to build Chew Reservoir over 100 years ago! That will lead us back to the Peace Plantation under Wimberry Stones for some final tranquil views before we get back to Dovestone Reservoir where we started! If you managed to read this far (well done) thanks for watching! Please do like the video if you did indeed like it. And subscribe to see more of what I pull together on my wanders.
