It's origin is located at the pterygoid fossa of the sphenoid bone, while it's insertion is found on the medial/internal surface of the angle of the mandible. It's nerve supply comes from the nerve to medial pterygoid muscle, which is a branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve. The medial pterygoid muscle is involved in the process of mastication, or chewing, mainly by elevation of the mandible, which closes the mouth. It also helps to move the jaw forward, known as protrusion. 0:30 Origin & insertion 1:07 Innervation 1:20 Action/functions Want to test your knowledge on the medial pterygoid muscle and other muscles of mastication?
