I was invited in Milano, Italy, in the famous « Grand Hotel Et de Milan » (Instagram : / ghoteletdemilan ) , and during breakfast I found out that they had a piano.. I had to play this Schubert piece to match the ancient and nostalgic atmosphere. This hotel has a very magical meaning for any musician. In fact it was the last home of Giuseppe Verdi for 27 years (until his death). Then during the whole 20th century, any great artist coming to perform at La Scala had his suite in this hotel (including Maria Callas of course). This piece, « Ständchen » (Serenade) was originally written for piano and voice by Schubert, and later transcribed for solo piano by Liszt. It tells the story of lover singing to his beloved through the night. Here are the original lyrics (translated from german to english) : Softly my songs implore Through the night to you Down into the quiet grove, Darling, come to me! Whispering, slender treetops rustle In the moon’s light, In the moon’s light. Do not fear the traitor’s hostile listening, Fear not, my dear, Fear not, my dear. Do you hear the nightingales call? Ah! they implore you With sweet sounds of lament, They implore you for me. They understand the heart’s longing, They know love’s pain, They know love’s pain, They touch with their silver tones Every tender heart, Every tender heart. Let your heart be moved as well, Darling, hear me! Trembling, I wait for you! Come, make me happy! Come, make me happy! Make me happy!
