The USS Cabrilla was a Balao-class submarine that made its mark in the Pacific during WWII. Launched in late 1942 and commissioned in mid-1943, she wasted no time getting into action. She set sail for Pearl Harbor before embarking on her first war patrol, which included a daring mission to rescue four Filipino guerrillas from Negros Island. Fremantle, Australia, became her base for five more patrols, each pushing deeper into enemy waters. Cabrilla took down her first merchant ship on her second patrol, while her third focused on critical reconnaissance in the Sunda Strait. By her sixth patrol in late 1944, she was a force to be reckoned with, sinking over 24,000 tons of enemy shipping, including a massive tanker. Her later missions saw her braving the rough waters near the Kurile Islands and rescuing downed aviators during air raids over Japan. After two years of relentless action, she returned home in 1945. Though briefly considered for preservation as a museum, she was ultimately scrapped in 1972. Cabrilla earned six battle stars and a place in history as one of the silent hunters of the deep. #WWII #USSCabrilla #SilentService #SubmarineWarfare #NavalHistory
