Seeing dandelions pop up all over our property is the first sign that warmer weather is on its way! Dandelions are rich in vitamins and minerals, polyphenols, and antioxidants. They also have anti inflammatory properties that make them a great addition to salve to use for any aches, pains, or skin irritations. There are many uses for the entire plant - today we are using the flowers, however the roots support liver function, and the bitter leaves support digestion. Make sure to harvest your dandelions somewhere that is not sprayed. How to Dry Dandelion Flowers: Arrange dandelion flowers on a herb drying rack or a baking sheet with a cooling rack on top. Allow to dry several days up to two weeks. Alternatively, dry dandelion flowers using a dehydrator. Place flowers on dehydrator trays. Dehydrate at 105 F/ 41 C for several hours. Dandelion Infused Oil Recipe: Add dried dandelion flowers to fill a jar. Top off with oil of your choice. My preference is olive oil. Jojoba, rosehip, sweet almond oil, or avocado oil are all great alternatives. DIY Dandelion Salve Recipe: 8 oz Dandelion Infused Oil 1 oz Beeswax Essential Oils (optional) Add beeswax to a mason jar. Keep in mind the container you melt the beeswax in will likely be unusable for anything else. Repurpose another jar, or use a chipped jar for this. Bring a pot with a few inches of water to a simmer over medium low heat. Place the mason jar into the pot. Allow the beeswax to fully melt. Add the dandelion infused oil. Let mixture cool slightly. If you choose to add essential oils, do so once the oil mixture has cooled slightly. Pour the salve mixture into jars and allow to cool and solidify.
