More than two years after the death of a Kalamazoo native and father of two, investigators say strong leads and physical evidence still are not enough to bring charges without a witness willing to testify. Kenneth Lee Woodard Jr., 33, was shot multiple times while driving near North Burdick Street and Paterson Street at about 3 a.m. on June 24, 2023, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. After the shooting, Woodard drove a short distance to West Prouty Street before first responders arrived. He died at a hospital about 20 minutes later, public safety officers said. KDPS Detective Ondreya Anderson told News Channel 3 investigators have received numerous Silent Observer tips and recovered multiple shell casings from the scene. Evidence suggests more than one shooter and indicates Woodard was the intended target. “They’re all silent, which means they are telling us who did it, but they’re not leaving their name [or] phone numbers for us to reach out to them and get more information,” Anderson said. Family members described Woodard, who had recently moved to Ohio, as protective, caring and devoted to his two young children. “His main thing was his two kids,” his father, Kenneth Woodard Sr., said. “His goal was to be in their life and raise them.” Woodward Jr's sister, Shaniquica Woodard, grew emotional when remembering her younger brother, known to loved ones as “King Kenny.” She told News Channel 3 her brother was trying to get his life in order after his mother’s death. “You would want justice, and that’s all we want,” Woodward Sr. said. According to Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting, his office needs evidence admissible in court that could convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt. That could include an eyewitness, DNA, cellphone records or a confession.
