Brand New Intermodals & Street Running Trains: A Day on Former Boston & Albany Lines

In this video, we spend a day along former Boston & Albany trackage. Our day begins in Chatham, New York in the early morning hours, containing a line where the B&A and later primarily New York Central, once connected Boston, Albany, New York City, and the Midwest. Dwindled throughout the century but still very much alive under CSX Transportation's Berkshire Subdivision. The highlight of the day is Norfolk Southern’s new double-stack intermodal service from Ayer, Massachusetts. As of January 2026, NS is now running double stacks via CSX, marking a major milestone for modern New England railroading. Featured is CSX Z619/NS 265, the first westbound movement back toward Chicago, running over the former Boston & Albany to Selkirk, utilizing the newly completed Voorheesville Runner and connecting with Norfolk Southern’s Freight Line and the former D&H. This represents a major shift from earlier single-stack operations that once ran over the former Boston & Maine. We then shifted our focus to another piece of Boston & Albany history: the Claverack Industrial Branch. We see CSX local L022 street run through the village of Hudson to work ADM Milling, the sole remaining customer on the line. This short & historic street running branch traces its roots back to the Hudson & Boston Railroad, later acquired by the Boston & Albany in 1870, and absorbed into the New York Central around 1900.
