The Austin Baroque Orchestra performs the first two movements from Charles Avison's fifth concerto grosso based upon the music of Domenico Scarlatti. The Italian composer's music was popular beyond Spain and Portugal, so much so that Avison, an Englishman, chose to use some of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas as the basis for twelve concerti grossi for strings. Similar to Handel's and Corelli's string concerti grossi, Avison's concerti set a smaller group—the concertino—made up of two violins, cello, and basso continuo (here, harpsichord and guitar) against the larger ensemble—the ripieno—made up of the rest of the strings and basso continuo (here, organ and harp).
