www.earlearchitects.com Earle Architects have recently completed a new dining building for the joint junior and infant school in Southwark. The new space provides a dedicated dining space for the children as well as forming an exciting new landscape in the school's playground, resulting in no loss of outdoor space. The subterranean pavilion consists of a domed dining hall with curved perimeter walls, a kitchen, and storage and welfare facilities. Inside the dining hall the fair faced in-situ concrete structure is left exposed with special attention to the domed ceiling which includes a radial design of wedge shaped acoustic panels and spoke lighting. Externally the structure is mostly covered in an accessible green roof which also extends to form a grass mound; complete with its own 8m long slide. The project is the first phase of a development plan for the school and Earle Architects have completed an internal re-fit of a number of spaces within the existing Victorian to redefine its entrance, provide a new reception, office spaces and a staff room.
