He has stated that in five years, Russia will have the capabilities to attack a NATO member. Rutte has also urged NATO members to increase defence spending, saying that 5% of GDP is simply not enough. Ursula von Der Leyen has responded to Trump’s criticisms by saying that democracy in Europe is a matter exclusively attributed to Europe and the US should not meddle. This was a clear warning to Donald Trump. Ursula has defended the EU’s policies by arguing that this is the very reason for why the EU is looking at possibly implementing the “Democracy Shield”.
