Join me on this walk along the Kawazu River to see the trees during Full Bloom Kawazu-zakura (Kawazu sakura) is a cultivar of Japanese cherry (Prunus × yedoensis and related hybrids) prized for its early and long-lasting bloom. Discovered in the early 20th century in Kawazu, a town on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, this variety is notable for its large, deep-pink single flowers and a flowering period that often begins in late February and can extend through March — earlier than the more famous Somei-yoshino. Individual flowers are showy and slightly scalloped, creating a vivid, rosy display that contrasts with the pale-pink and nearly white blossoms of many other ornamental cherries. Compared with many sakura, Kawazu-zakura trees tend to hold their blossoms longer and sometimes retain both flowers and fresh green leaves simultaneously, producing a layered, multi-hued effect. The trees themselves are typically medium-sized with a graceful branching habit, making them well suited to parks, streets, and riverside plantings. Their robustness and relatively early flowering make them a popular choice in climates where late cold snaps are less common, although they can tolerate typical temperate conditions found across much of Japan. #kawazu #sakura #shizuoka #japan #walkingtour
