While filming inside an urban detention center in northwest Indiana, our cameras followed the Center's Residential Supervisor, Jamie, as she worked with both boys and girls who were detained while waiting for their court hearings. In this interview during her time on the job, Jamie described what it was like to be in charge of up to 100 kids in the center, the types of offenses that landed them behind bars--everything from truancy to murder--the issues a lot of kids face at home and in their communities, and what the realities are about life in the juvenile justice system. Jamie also discusses the process involved once a youth is arrested and detained, and says some parents even call the Center to ask if they can drop off their unruly kids. She says the most difficult issue she faces is seeing kids with mental health issues ensnared in the system, and believes there should be no such thing as a "throwaway child."
