Syncopation And The Clave (Drums Of The World)

Using the clave (meaning 'the key') is one method to help develop rhythmic feel and syncopation. In this section of the drum workshop, we split the group into two: one half holds down the clave pattern on cowbells and woodblocks, while the others drive the main groove (AAAB) on the drums. Some hits lock together while others 'dance around' the pulse to create that syncopated 'feel' that makes the rhythm move. Thanks to everyone who took part in the session.
