Craniotomy is the surgical removal of the piece of the skull bone to access the brain. Craniotomy may be recommended to treat Brain tumour Aneurysm Hematoma Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) Brain swelling Head Injury Brain infection Excess cerebrospinal fluid Epilepsy Implant stimulator devices Procedure An incision is made depending on the affected area of the brain. The skin and muscles are lifted off the bone and folded back. A medical drill is used to make burr holes in the skull. The burr holes allow entrance of a special saw called a craniotome. The cut bone flap is lifted and removed. The dura is opened to expose the brain. The brain tumour is removed. The dura is closed with sutures. The bone is put back in its original position with titanium plates and screws. The muscles and skin are sutured back together. A soft adhesive dressing is placed over the incision. If the bone flap is not immediately replaced, the procedure is called a craniectomy.
