Today I want to share a fascinating piece of Beatles history – a brilliant guitar modification by John Lennon, that had a huge impact on the band's signature sound. We'll look at how Lennon solved a common problem with his Rickenbacker325 guitar middle pickup using an elegantly simple solution that helped define the iconic Beatles guitar tone we all know and love. _______________________________ DISCOVER MY GEAR AND RECORDING TECHNIQUES! ➡ https://bit.ly/2B7kgZU _______________________________ NEED A BEATLES-QUE MUSIC OR VOCAL ARRANGEMENT? Whether you're a guitarist, a Beatles fan, or just interested in music history, I think you'll find this story really interesting. Let's dive in and explore this important piece of guitar innovation that helped shape rock history. This story begins in 1960, when a young Lennon spotted the guitar in Hamburg some say at Steinway Music Store some other at Music Rotthoff store. It wasn't the typical choice for British musicians at the time - they usually favored German made guitars at the time. But Lennon was instantly drawn. What really impressed him was that its fingerboard was shorter than his Hofner Club 40's. This meant he could play those boogie rhythm more easily, without having to stretch his fingers as much as before. For years, a myth circulated through the guitar community: Lennon had deliberately disconnected his middle pickup. Some said he didn't like the sound. Others claimed that John removed the middle pickup of his guitar because it would create unwanted clicking sounds. But here's what we actually know: Lennon predominantly used the bridge pickup, both in studio sessions and live performances. His distinctive playing style placed his hand very close to the bridge of the guitar, right over the bridge pickup. Then there's the evidence hidden in plain sight. Photographs from October 1963 - right when The Beatles were becoming a global phenomenon - reveal something curious. The middle pickup cover shows significant rusting, a condition typically caused by hand sweat. But remember - Lennon's hand position was nowhere near the middle pickup. So why was it rusted? The answer might be surprisingly simple: The bridge pickup likely failed, and Lennon swapped it with the still-functioning middle pickup of his Rickenbacker 325 Capri. That's why we see a rusty pickup in the middle position - it was originally the bridge pickup that had been exposed to years of Lennon's playing. Another subtle but crucial modification was made to the guitar, likely at the same time the pickups were replaced. This change to the guitar played a key role in defining the Beatles' signature sound and helped establish their place in music history and we will cover it in a next video. Lennon would continue to use this Rickenbacker until 1964, when Rickenbacker gave him an updated 325 model. But this original 325 Capri, had already helped create the signature sound of the British Invasion. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one. Not a deliberate modification, just a practical solution from a musician who needed his instrument to keep playing. _______________________________ This video is in nature instructional, with the purposes of education, comparison, and criticism only.
