The fall of Constantinople in 1453 ended the Byzantine Empire and changed the course of world history forever. Yet the story did not end with the capture of the city. Among those who survived was Anna Notaras, daughter of the Byzantine Grand Duke Loukas Notaras. After the Ottoman conquest she fled west and eventually settled in Venice, where many Greek refugees rebuilt their lives and preserved the traditions of Byzantium. In Venice Anna Notaras became one of the most important patrons of the Greek community. She helped support scholars, protect ancient manuscripts, and contributed to the founding of the Greek Orthodox Church of San Giorgio dei Greci, which still stands today as a symbol of the Byzantine diaspora. This documentary explores the life of Anna Notaras and the survival of Byzantine culture after the fall of Constantinople. From the final days of the Eastern Roman Empire to the canals of Venice, this story reveals how one woman helped preserve the legacy of a lost empire. History did not end in 1453. In Venice the memory of Byzantium lived on. If you enjoy history documentaries about the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople, Venice, and the fall of empires, consider subscribing to the channel.
