We found a charming, less touristy, authentic holiday destination, with history, and a stunning jungle resort escape on its famous river. Our visit started in the laid-back middle of town, at the most iconic symbol of Kanchanaburi. this bridge. The bridge was part of the Death Railway and was made famous worldwide in the 1957 film "The Bridge on the River Kwai." It’s easy to access, a sombre reminder of the war. Not many trains cross the bridge each day — it's a low-traffic, scenic route, mainly serving tourists and locals. Typically, two to three scheduled trains cross the bridge per day in each direction as part of the Bangkok–Nam Tok line. Renting a car gave us more flexibility, and we were quickly further exploring the fascinating province Tham Kra Sae Train Station About 15 kilometres from Kanchanaburi town, the Tham Kra Sae Train Station was a scenic stop on the Bangkok–Nam Tok line, a popular highlight on the Death Railway route. The station is famous for its proximity to the dramatic Wang Pho Viaduct. Wang Pho Viaduct This stunning piece of railway engineering, a wooden trestle bridge clinging to the side of a cliff, overlooking the Khwae Noi River, was built by Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers under Japanese rule during WWII. Spanning around 400 meters it was constructed in just 17 days in 1943 by prisoners under brutal conditions. More than 100,000 lives were lost during the construction of this Thai-Burma railway. Tham Kra Sae cave is a natural limestone formation right next to the railway line. During the war, it was used as a shelter and camp for Allied POWs and Japanese soldiers. Now, a place of reflection. Quite moving! River Kwai Resotel Resort Our resort for 2 nights was still 45 minutes up the road. I highly recommend a GPS route using small windy roads through charming countryside. We were in for a treat! TripAdvisor have ranked it as #1 of the resorts in Sai Yok. We could have also arrived by boat on a different type of tour. Situated on the banks of the River Kwai Noi, the River Kwai Resotel is around 60 kilometres out of Kanchanaburi town. Offering activities such as canoeing, bamboo rafting, biking, cooking classes, cave tours, visiting Mon tribal villages, a spa and even watering herbal and palm gardens. You definitely can’t get bored. We had found our ideal jungle escape from the bustle of Bangkok. Riverside relaxation .. and luxury in the forest. And incredible value for money! Day trips near the resort include the Sai Yok Noi and Yai Waterfalls, the Lawa Cave and both the Erawan and Sai Yok National Parks. Another attraction not to overlook is Hellfire Pass, a drive around 85 kilometres on the other side of the river. From the museum, you can descend down to the pass and walk on to the the Hellfire Pass Walking Trail, stretching several kilometres through cuttings and embankments to the most notorious section of this railway. This holiday took us by car, but we’re sure that using the train would be an adventurous option. A fascinating 5-hour journey from Bangkok Thonburi Station to Nam Tok Station, and then a 10-minute-long tail ride across the river to the Resotel.
