Peter Kline is Associate Professor of Theology at St Francis College, which is a member of the University of Divinity. He is the author of 'Passion for Nothing: Kierkegaard’s Apophatic Theology'. Abstract: The tradition of psychology that begins with Sigmund Freud emphasizes an unknowable and unmasterable core of the human being—the unconscious. Psychoanalysis has traditionally been a sharp critic of religion and theology, claiming that they are defensive formations against the overwhelming and ambivalent nature of human existence. But is this whole story? Theology also has a tradition of emphasizing the unknowable and the unmasterable dimensions of both God and the human being, which goes by the names “negative” or “apophatic” theology. This presentation will forge some connections between theology and psychoanalysis, exploring how both can affirm the enigmatic and unmasterable dimensions of being human.
