Volvo has earned a well deserved reputation for auto safety. From the development of the 3-point seat belt to this run-off road protection system, Volvo has been a safety leader. There is perhaps no story that illustrates this better than what happened in November of 2014. This is when the first generation Volvo XC90 underwent testing in the small-overlap crash test. The small overlap test was new at the time. It is very challenging because only 25% of the car width strikes the barrier, which concentrates the force in a small area. Before the Volvo was tested, there were many vehicles that experienced structural collapse in this test. The Volvo XC90 was one of the few vehicles that did well. This is impressive in its own right. But what makes this so remarkable is the XC90 was more than 10 years old at this point. This story beautifully displayed how Volvo holistically designs their vehicles to protect occupants in a wide variety of situations and not just to perform well in particular crash test that the public will see. We are at this moment again. The second generation of the XC90 is going on 8 years old. And now it has recently undergone the new, more demanding side-impact crash test. As expected, the structure performs well. After the impact, there is 18.5 cm of space between the seat centre-line and b-pillar. The b-pillar does a great job deflecting energy to the upper and lower structure and around the occupant compartment. Occupant protection is very strong as well, with the risk of injury low for both the driver and rear-seat passenger. Overall, the Volvo earns top marks in the side impact test. And it represents another story that highlights Volvo’s commitment to safety. Raw video footage courtesy of the IIHS and Volvo.
