Y. Puran Kumar, 52, an IPS officer from the Haryana cadre, left behind an eight-page note exposing years of caste-based discrimination, humiliation, and targeted harassment within the police system. From being denied leave to see his dying father to facing fake complaints and casteist taunts, Kumar detailed how systemic bias crushed him over the years. His wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, has accused top officials, including the Haryana DGP, of conspiring to push him to suicide. An FIR under the SC/ST Act has been registered, and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes has taken cognizance. This isn’t just one tragedy. It’s a reflection of how caste still survives in India’s most “modern” institutions, from bureaucracy to policing. A Dalit officer had to die to remind the nation that representation without dignity is hollow.
