Dubrovnik, ital. Ragusavecchia) is a town in Croatia, located in the South-East of Dubrovnik on the Adriatic coast, in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Cavtat is the center of the Konavle community and the most southern city of Croatia. It has a population of 2 thousand people. Cavtat is an ancient city, it was known as the Greek colony of Epidaurus (Epidauros). In 228 BC the city came under the rule of the Romans and later became a Roman colony. The name of the city has also undergone some changes: it was Latinized. Thus, the city became known as Epidaurum (lat. Epidaurum). The first mention of the Roman city of Epidaurus refers to the year 47 before Christ. To our days almost never came objects of material culture. Partially preserved aqueduct that connects Epidaurum with Vodolaga village in Konavle, supplied the city with water. The name of the place where he got water (Konavle — Canalis) gave the name to the whole area. In the beginning of VII century the city was attacked, Avar-Slavic invasion and, presumably, in 614, the refugees from Epidaurus founded the city of Ragusa (modern Dubrovnik). Since then, Slavic Cavtat belonged to the state Travunia. In 1426 he was bought from Duke R. Pavlovic by the Republic of Dubrovnik and Cavtat this time fully shared the fate of Dubrovnik. Currently, Cavtat is one of the popular tourist centers of Croatia. Most of the buildings preserved from the times of the Dubrovnik Republic, built in the Renaissance style with Gothic elements. These are Prince's Palace, the Church of St. Nicholas and the monastery of virgin Mary of the Snow. Also, partially intact city walls and fortifications. In the rector's Palace houses a collection of Baltazar Bogisic: library with 22 thousand rare books, valuable archives, a collection graphics, a collection of ancient coins, weapons, ethnographical collection. In the vicinity of Cavtat are the ruins ilirika, Greek and Roman settlements. During the excavations there was found amphorae, pieces of buildings, mosaics, etc. Near the monastery are preserved the remains of city streets, the ruins of the amphitheatre and stairs leading to the hill towering over the city, where according to legend there was a temple of Asclepius and later (in Roman times) was a forum Aug. Currently, the hill is the masterpiece of Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović mausoleum of the family Račić.
