Can we understand the growth of root hair cells in plants using computer models? Prof Claire Grierson is a plant specialist researching root hair development. Her talk details her experiences of cross-disciplinary discussions and the paths these can lead to. By collaborating with researchers in other disciplines, such as engineering; environmental science; computer science and maths, Claire has been able to gain insights into several fascinating aspects of root hair development. She went on to research potato tuber development as her PhD funded by a Sainsbury Studentship with Professor Mike Bevan FRS at Cambridge University and the John Innes Centre. Since then she has worked on root development in Arabidopsis, first as a post-doctoral researcher at the John Innes Centre and later as a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellow at IACR-Long Ashton. Claire became a lecturer at the University of Bristol in 2000, Professor in 2009, a Director of the Bristol BioDesign Institute in 2017 and Head of School in 2018. She enjoys collaborating with researchers in other disciplines, especially engineering, environmental science, computer science and maths.
