Who is Mara in Buddhism?

Who is Māra in Buddhism? We'll give an answer to that question by looking at how Māra is both similar to and different from the Christian idea of the devil. We'll also look at a famous simile about Māra from the earliest stratum of Buddhism, using that to illuminate his character and what we can do about the effects that he represents. The poem contains metaphors both of a lake -- Pāli: sara -- and of a flood of water -- Pāli: ogha. Probably the most accurate translation would involve a lake in flood, but the metaphor of the stream of saṃsāra is also very prevalent in Buddhism).
