In this experimental ikebana session, we take on the challenge of working with an unbelievably large sunflower — a bold, sculptural material that asks us to rethink proportion, mechanics, and balance. When a flower becomes too big for traditional containers, it demands engineering as much as design. Using custom supports, glass tubes, and flexible metal elements, we explore how to give this oversized bloom lightness and movement, while keeping its massive presence as a visual anchor. 🌿 What you’ll see: — How to handle and cut unusually large dried floral material — Techniques to expose and shape inner textures (like seeds and grain) — Using spring metal strips for movement and dynamic support — Balancing visual weight without losing delicacy — A dialogue between scale: giant sunflower meets miniature blooms This arrangement is a play in contrast, scale, and structure — embracing imperfection and visibility of mechanics, in true Sogetsu spirit. It’s about letting the flower lead, even when the flower is enormous. 💬 Have you ever worked with oversized or “impossible” materials? What structural tricks helped you?
