If you are an avid skier you'll know it can be a fun and highly exhilarating pastime. Skiing can be classed as an extreme sport, as not many of us prepare for the physical demands that skiing places on the body, meaning that ski injuries are common. OneWelbeck’s Orthopaedics consultant Mr Toby Baring explains how to minimise the most common ski injuries whilst skiing. Mr Baring discusses different types of knee injuries from skiing and how to prevent those skiing injuries, the main information to consider when skiing is how to position your body to prevent any common injuries to the knee. By flexing your joints from the hip, knees and ankles and by keeping these positions, the chances of sustaining injuries are much lower. The most common injuries during skiing is tearing the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Pete Gillespie examples how to prevent acl injuries whilst skiing. When skiing it is important that you keep your ankles, knees and hips flexed when steering the skis, if you are skiing with your legs straight, you might be searching for the twist higher up and that is one of the main causes of an acl injury. You want to allow your legs to do the steering then let the up half of the body to follow your legs. By doing this technique this can help prevent any acl injuries when skiing. When falling, there is a tendency to want to put your arms out to cushion, but if you are in a situation of falling it is important that you fold your arms into your body and try to put your hip into that ground. Keeping your arms by your side will help prevent any dislocations in the shoulders and any injuries to your waist and thumbs.
