Yana Stepanenko, 13, and her family were escaping Russian war from the east of Ukraine when they came under a brutal Russian attack on a train station. Yana was severely injured and had her both legs amputated as a result. Two years later, she ran a five-kilometer race at one of the most iconic marathons, in Boston. But it wasn't just a personal accomplishment. Yana raised $15,000 to support a fellow Ukrainian with an amputated leg. The Kyiv Independent met with Yana and her family to talk about her journey and recovery.
