Through the hedgerows south of Bayeux, a German counterattack by the Second Panzer Division met a British rifle section from the First Battalion, Rifle Brigade. In four minutes of fighting, one Bren gunner fired one hundred twenty rounds and stopped an assault by an M-G-forty-two team and supporting infantry. When examined later, the German weapon had burned out its barrel after two belts — five hundred rounds — fired too fast to aim. The British report noted simply: "The Bren dominated the engagement." This moment exposed a paradox that would define infantry warfare in Western Europe: how a five-hundred-round-per-minute, thirty-round magazine weapon — carried by a single man — could outperform the twelve-hundred-round-per-minute, belt-fed German M-G-forty-two in real combat. What followed was a data-driven lesson in reliability, control, and doctrine — one that would influence machine gun design for the next fifty years.
