In a special edition of The Newsmakers from the Antalya Diplomacy Forum 2025, Andrea Sanke sits down with Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestine Refugees. It's been 77 years since almost a million Palestinians were ethnically cleansed through forced displacement from their lands in what is now Israel. For Palestinians it's known as the Nakba or Catastrophe. A year later, in 1949, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, was established to provide crucial aid. Today, that lifeline is under threat. With Israel's ban on UNRWA operations and a blockade on Gaza now in its fifth week, Palestinians face an acute hunger crisis. As food, water and medical supplies run critically low, the UN warns of famine risk with over 60,000 children suffering from malnutrition. How can an agency mandated to help refugees be banned from operating? And what does this mean for millions of Palestinians who depend on its services?
