Classic Ferry Video 1999 - The last (secret) visit of ferry DANMARK

The former DSB railway ferry DANMARK arrived in North Jutland in August 1999 for scrapping. After a short layover period the demolition work began in the end of summer. I visited the dying ship the last time. It is hardly possible to observe ship scraps at close range in our latitudes. Since December 1997 the ferry, which was put into service in 1968, has been waiting to be sold in Nakskov, Denmark (see my videos from Nakskov; see also the visit onbaord DANMARK with TR.I.S. from Italy). Initially, the ship was offered on the market with 2.5 million US dollars. For the equivalent of 110000 Euro the ship was sold to a scrap yard in Grenaa, Denmark. The transfer journey took place from 02 August to 04 August 1999. Then the ship had arrived at its last destination. First it was started to slaughter the ship from the inside. Ceilings and wall coverings were removed, furniture, tables, chairs and everything that could still be used were cleared out. At the beginning of December the entire aft superstructure had already disappeared. In January 2000, the front of the accomodation was finally finished. Apart from the fact that the heaviest hurricane of the century, Anatol, hit Denmark on that day, there was dead silence in the ship itself.
