This video is not a jab at our African Cultures. There's a lot that I admire about them. As much as I am critiquing how we go about showing respect in our cultures, I still get lots of compliments from older generations because of the way I personally show respect to others. One time I was having a weekend trip around Cape Town, an old man started a discussion with me about respect when he observed me removing my hat to speak to an older person. He said he hadn't seen that from a young man in years and he believed that young people are getting more and more disrespectful towards older people. However, one thing I detest about respect in my Shona culture is how it is essentially equated to fear. We are taught to never question our elders and when we do question them, they get angry, they silence us and go on a rant about respect. Because of this, we also can't express our feelings in their presence, and we can't think for ourselves for the same reasons. This way we have been raised comes back to bite us as we grow older and more independent. In the classroom, in the workplace, and among friends and family.
