The Stanford Pain Relief Innovations Lab presents Dr. John T. Farrar, "Evidence for the Efficacy of Chronic Opioid Use: 12 Month Opioid Safety Studies". John T. Farrar, MD, MSCE, PhD is a Professor of Epidemiology, Neurology, and Anesthesia at the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) at the University of Pennsylvania and is the President of the US Association for the Study of Pain. He has been involved in clinical research for over 30 years, with a major focus on studies of the efficacy of pain therapeutics and the design of pain clinical trials. As a neurologist and a pharmacoepidemiologist, he has been involved in randomized trials (RCTs), cohort studies, and methodologic studies of pain and associated symptoms. He is currently the Principal Investigator (PI) of an FDA-funded contract to study the use of opioids in treating pain and a second contract to evaluate treatments for acute pain and is PI of the Penn Specialized Clinical Center as part of the NIH-HEAL EPPIC-Network initiative. He is also a co-investigator for the NIDDK-funded data coordinating center (DCC) for the “Multidisciplinary Approach to Pelvic Pain (MAPP) Research Network”. Additionally, he co-directs the Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) program, a two-year program focused on training 25-30 fellows per year to launch their independently funded clinical research careers, and teaches courses in health measurement, clinical trials, and grant writing. His research focus continues to be on improving the design of clinical trials and examining data on current therapies to improve the quality and validity of evidence in pain therapeutics. Note: CME credits are not available for viewings of past CME lectures. Recording date: July 27, 2023
