#Thailand #Bangkok #travel Thonburi sits on the western side of the Chao Phraya River opposite the main tourist landmarks of Bangkok such as The Grand Palace and Wat Pho. During the Ayutthaya Kingdom period, before Bangkok was Bangkok, the area was an important garrison town. At that time, the Chao Phraya River had a completely different course than it has today and in 1542 a small canal was dug across the base of a meander to shorten sailing time. In 1767, after the sack of Ayutthaya by the Burmese, General Taksin, as he was then, took back control of Siam and made Thonburi his capital as part of his Thonburi Kingdom, with himself crowned king. However, his Kingdom was short-lived and he was deposed by King Rama I who then moved the capital across the river where it remains to this day. Whilst Bangkok grew and prospered under successive kings, Thonburi remained an independent town and province, until it was merged with Bangkok in 1971. Thonburi has stayed less developed than the other side of the river and so has kept some of its charm in the form of many traditional small waterways known as khlongs. In this, part 2, video I climb inside Wat Prayun Wongsawat Worawihan's huge 60m chedi, walk around a replica of a cosmic mountain, visit a temple that is said to be one of the most beautiful and outstanding temples of Bangkok, pay my respects in a garden dedicated to King Rama IX's mother, visit a riverside Chinese shrine, and look up at Bangkok's newest self-promoting icon - the huge 69m high seated Buddha statue at Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen. So, when visiting Bangkok, don't neglect to visit the Thonburi side of the river. 0:00 - Intro 0:20 - Memorial Bridge 1:02 - Wat Prayun Wongsawat Worawihan 2:40 - Khao Mo Mountain Replica 4:44 - Wat Phitchaya Yatikaram Worawihan 6:14 - Chao Pho Suea Shrine 6:45 - Princess Mother Memorial Park & Museum 8:49 - Guan Yu Shrine 10:13 - LHONG 1919 11:21 - Wat Intharam Worawiharn 12:52 - Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen Locations of the places visited in this video are as follows: 📍 Memorial Bridge: https://goo.gl/maps/C5wHjFD3aAbgpU3e7 📍 Wat Prayun Wongsawat Worawihan: https://goo.gl/maps/CEWv6wi6DhoLPWej7 📍 Khao Mo Mountain Replica: https://goo.gl/maps/H8mu1SvHSxnsnFqb7 📍 Wat Phitchaya Yatikaram Worawihan: https://goo.gl/maps/SsCD9yBQb3VizoD98 📍 Chao Pho Suea Shrine: https://goo.gl/maps/D8DyEnZThAwktKda7 📍 Princess Mother Memorial Park & Museum: https://goo.gl/maps/CuTdojgNzdwpaakq6 📍 Guan Yu Shrine: https://goo.gl/maps/hmHuKrMM2CJ92eQa7 📍 LHONG 1919: https://goo.gl/maps/jVfNR3of4Tj2cRuHA 📍 Wat Intharam Worawiharn: https://goo.gl/maps/nhdAJcvEUm1Cz7Eu7 📍 Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen: https://goo.gl/maps/eEZNARQ4vC59cx3Y6 ☕ Please support my channel by buying me a coffee here: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/willetts...
