Lloyd Biggle Jr's "All The Colors Of Darkness" and "Watchers Of The Dark" "Biggle was born in 1923 in Waterloo, Iowa. He served in World War II as a communications sergeant in a rifle company of the 102nd Infantry Division; during the war, he was wounded twice. His second wound, a shrapnel wound in his leg received near the Elbe River at the end of the war, left him disabled for life. After the war, Biggle resumed his education. He received an A.B. Degree with High Distinction from Wayne State University and M.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. Biggle taught at the University of Michigan and at Eastern Michigan University in the 1950s. He began writing professionally in 1955 and became a full-time writer with the publication of his novel, All the Colors of Darkness in 1963; he continued in the writing profession until his death. Biggle was the founding secretary-treasurer of the Science Fiction Writers of America and served as chairman of its trustees for many years" This biography is mostly from Wikipedia, but is consistent with what I read about Biggle Jr in the magazines and his published books. Reviews: “All The Colors Of Darkness” 1963 and “Watchers Of The Dark” 1966, Lloyd Biggle Jr. I could not find much about my copies. They were published by Leisure Books/Nordon Publications Inc. “All the Colors” says “cover photograph posed by professional model”, no info at all for the cover art of “Watchers of the Dark” could be found. All The Colors of Darkness. The novel begins with Engineer Ted Arnold and his crew testing their new Matter Transmitter. The machines keep blowing up, shortly after each successful test, for no apparent reason. This leads to multiple engineering revisions, attempting to solve the problem, but their main financial backer is about broke. They have success with a revised design and go into business. Vehicle, Shipbuilding etc. freak out. Governments are trying to adjust, too. Then surveillance video reveals that some passengers never arrive at their destinations. No Police reports, no lawyers show up, so what is really going on? Arnold calls in one of their investors, a private investigator and his sidekick Miss Schlupe, 60 years of age. They discover thru video and direct observation, it is always the same 2 or 3 oddly dressed people and they have pulled this vanishing act repeatedly. This leads to a wild adventure, involving a Galactic Council and alien agents that do not think Earth is ready for matter transmitters! Biggle Jr develops his worldbuilding, characters and plotlines very well. The group of Police Aliens Darzek encounters are also very well described and their personalities are distinct and credible. 9 of 10 stars! Watchers Of The Dark. Jan Darzek and Miss Schlupe are contacted by the Galactic Council for help. However, they have no recollection of their first encounter, their memories of it were erased by the Galactic Council the last time. Memories restored, they agree to help the Council. The Council has a severe problem, they are losing planets and entire Systems to chaos and anarchy and this problem is spreading and the Council refers to this phenomenon as “The Dark”. Darzek and Miss Schlupe agree to investigate, which they begin doing, on the trip to the problem planets. Things go wrong, as spying, assassinations, false identities, and fabrications pile up, leaving Darzek the last Council member with access to the Galactic data base/AI, known as Supreme. A great novel with Biggle Jr. analyzing government, assumptions, and about everything else. Multiple world building and multiple alien race personalities developed! 9 of 10 stars. There are more Darzek sequels, I have to reread. I first read these 2 novels in 1966, my friend who gave me the SF books in my Gifted SF books video had them. Lloyd Biggle Jr. also wrote “Monument”, that may be his most known novel. 9.5 out of 10 stars!
