Nearly a century after the Washington Athletic Club first opened its doors in 1930, the downtown Seattle institution is being led for the first time by a woman as it prepares to head into its next century. For 95 years, men have led the Washington Athletic Club. Suzana Sakay is now the club’s president and CEO, becoming the first woman to hold the role and the eighth executive in the club’s history. “It’s a big honor,” Sakay said. Sakay's path to the top job was shaped by perseverance, hard work and sacrifice, beginning with her childhood in the Balkans. Born and raised in the region, Sakay fled with her family at 14-years-old, during the civil war.
