In our new series Flora & Faith Pt 1: Abiding in the Vine, Walking The Text Founder Brad Gray unpacks how God responds when his followers are struggling to bear good fruit. We all experience challenging seasons when our lives aren’t as fruitful as we’d like them to be. So, what do we do in these seasons in order to come out the other side a faithful and fruitful disciple? Before we can answer that question, it’s helpful to know a little about vines. Grapevines were one of the most important fruit-bearing species in the land of Israel. To have a fruitful vine was not only a symbol of the good life, it was a symbol of a faithful Israel. But the opposite was also true: a vine with no grapes or poor grapes was a metaphor for a disobedient Israel. In fact, that’s exactly the point of Isaiah 5:1-7, a passage that foretells Israel’s faithlessness and God’s judgment. But Jesus’s illustration of the gardener, the vine, and its branches in John 15 is a powerful lesson about faithfulness in the midst of fruitlessness. By understanding the techniques and practices of ancient viticulture, we’ll discover not only what Jesus wants from His disciples, but what they can do to accomplish it. By the end of Flora & Faith Pt 1: Abiding in the Vine, you’ll be inspired and encouraged by the way God lifts up His followers when they’re struggling.
