The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary dates back to the 14th century and is a sacred place with many beautiful Hindu temples and lots of monkeys! In fact, you’ll find around 1,200 macaque monkeys roaming around the forest. In Balinese culture, monkeys are sacred, and they symbolise both protection and mischief. You can make your way around the forest by following various pathways covered by the shade of gorgeous green trees, and yes, filled with plenty of monkey sightings. It’s absolutely glorious and sureal to be walking or strolling around the temple while co-existing with monkeys all over the place. And they're just completely fine and seem at peace even when there are so many tourists roaming the place. I am in awe just watching all of these cute monkeys behave like humans, and they seem to be super smart, too. It's worth the visit when you're in Ubud. It's along Jl. Monkey Forest, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia Things to note upon visiting : The temple is open to the public daily from 8:30am to 6:00 pm Plan to spend about 1-2 hours here Dress appropriately (comfortable and closed toed shoes are best) Zip up all bags and backpacks, but try to leave them behind if possible Do not carry any other food/drinks besides bananas if you want to feed them. Otherwise, just don't marry anything with you as you walk, if you want them to just ignore you. Any exposed gear will be grabbed by the monkeys (i.e., sunglasses, headband, hat, camera case, etc.). Though, they seem to be pretty much behaved and nonchalant when I visit the park. Avoid prolonged eye contact or slow movement, which can be perceived as a threat by the monkeys. The temple is just 7 minute away from Ubud market or Palace, via grab bike or gojek. Or about 17 minutes walk. #bali #balilife #ubudbali #monkeys #monkeyforestbali
