THE DARK FANTASTIC: EMANCIPATING YOUR IMAGINATION Have you ever looked for yourself in a story of magic and wonder, only to find yourself sidelined, sacrificed, or erased? Dr. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas calls this the "imagination gap." In the High Lonesome, being denied a place in the "fantastic" isn’t just a literary oversight—it is a glitch in our collective ability to dream ourselves into existence. To heal, we must bridge this gap and reclaim our right to the miraculous. THE DARK FANTASTIC CYCLE Thomas identifies a recurring script in Western stories called the Dark Fantastic Cycle. It traps characters of colour in five stages: Spectacle: Being treated as a marvel or a threat. Hesitation: Your presence "interrupts" the fantasy world. Violence: Symbolic or actual harm used to resolve the tension. Haunting: Lingering as a ghost or a "present-absence" after being removed. Emancipation: The rare liberation from this restrictive cycle. THE REALITY OF THE GAP Statistics from the Cooperative Children’s Book Centre (CCBC) highlight this gap: as recently as 2018, only about 10% of children’s books featured Black protagonists, while roughly 50% featured White protagonists and 27% featured animals or inanimate objects. This "corrupt data" tells marginalised youth they are less central than non-human characters. RESTORYING YOUR REALITY Narrative Sovereignty is achieved through "restorying"—the process of reading and writing yourself into existence by subverting old scripts. Whether it is Rue’s innocence, Gwen’s royalty, or Bonnie’s power, we must refuse the "dark sacrifice" and move toward Emancipation. By decolonising our dreams, we create infinite storyworlds where our voices are the centre. SYSTEM PATCH: THE SOVEREIGN AUTHOR CORRUPT DATA: I am a side character in someone else’s magic. I am only here to serve the protagonist’s growth or face a tragic end. OVERWRITE: I am an endarkened being of whole power. I am the hero of my own infinite storyworld. I use the Sankofa bird to look back at my history so I can fly toward my future. The simulation is malleable, and I am the lead programmer. BIBLIOGRAPHY Thomas, Ebony Elizabeth. The Dark Fantastic.
