Chinese New Year Rice Cake Recipe (Nian Goa) 年糕/新年のケーキ/เค้กปีใหม่ /Kanom Keng/ pastel de nuevo año chino Ingredients: 250 g glutinous rice flour, sieved 250 ml water or coconut milk 280 g brown sugar banana leaves 4-5 10 cm-width round baking tins or ceramic bowl muslin cloths to cover nian goa while steaming How to make Chinese New Year Cake 1. Boil the coconut milk in a saucepan, add brown sugar cook until sugar dissolved completely. Let it cool completely. 2. When it has cooled down, add sugar to the rice flour. Add water if needed. 3. Grease the bowl/tin with cooking oil , line the banana leaves (cut to a size of buttom as base, and into stripes for the side,stick banana leafs around the bowl until you form a bowl. 4. Put the bowl in a steamer. 5. Pour the mixture into the bowl and steam over low heat for about 8-10 hours. Wrap the lid of the steamer with muslin cloths so that the condensation water will not drip into the cakes. If the cake doesn’t get consumed during Chinese New Year, it can be kept in the fridge for weeks, The cake tastes good when sliced, dipped in egg yolk & flour and fried up for a snack.
