This was July 2, 2021, and it was a Friday, going into a holiday weekend, just before rush hour. The I-40 bridge across the Mississippi River was closed in May of 2021 due to a large crack in a tie-girder, rendering the bridge unsafe. This left I-55 as the only way to get across the Mississippi River for miles in either direction. Memphis being a major cargo transportation hub, a LOT of commercial traffic, plus pretty much anyone wanting to cross the river has to be compacted down into two lanes on a poorly planned Interstate highway.
