Archive footage of the original Elisabeth Bridge in Budapest. It was named after the popular Habsburg queen Sissi, a queen and empress of Austria-Hungary, who was assassinated in 1898. The bridge caused mechanic sensation in 1903 when it was completed, since it was built without an intermediate pillar and crossed the Danube with a 290 meter wide opening, functioning basically as a suspension bridge connecting Buda and Pest. The mechanical solution the engineers used is a common practice now when it comes to suspension bridges, but then it was a very unique idea of the Hungarian engineers. The original Elizabeth (Erzsébet) Bridge, along with many other bridges all over the country, was blown up at the end of World War II by retreating Wehrmacht sappers. This is the only bridge in Budapest which could not be rebuilt in its original form. I will keep updating the video as I find new footage.
