Word Warriors. Oral histories of the Canadian Forces Public Affairs Branch: Medak Pocket. Former Canadian Forces public affairs officer Colonel Marc A. Rouleau, OMM, CD, Canadian Army, recounts his intense experience leading public affairs as part of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in war-torn former Yugoslavia in 1993. During a violent standoff between UN-mandated Canadian forces (commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel James Calvin, PPCLI) and intransigent Croatian forces, Rouleau observes the impact of the news media on military operations and, along with his military photographer, witnesses and records evidence of potential warm crimes. Days after a news conference by Calvin with a half-dozen news media, only a couple of news media remained in Medak at a critical juncture. Canadian journalists were focussed on the related conflict in neighbouring Bosnia. Two dozen Croatians were reportedly killed; four Canadians were wounded and one, Captain James DeCoste, PPCLI, was killed in an apparent road accident.
