The 74-year-old Lake in the Hills resident was participating in a low-dose computed tomography lung screening program and had received her first low-dose CT lung screening at Centegra Health System. But when life got busy, she postponed scheduling the recommended annual follow-up screening. “I had gotten the second or third letter before I scheduled the appointment, but I’m certainly glad I did,” Kreider said. After more than 50 years of smoking, Kreider was diagnosed with lung cancer when her follow-up screening detected a small mass in her lung. Her cancer was found before it spread to the lymph nodes, leading to an excellent prognosis. Studies have shown low-dose CT lung screening can lower the risk of death from lung cancer by 20 percent in people who are at high risk of developing the disease, because the screening identifies cancer in an early stage. Cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon Dr. Thomas Hinkamp performed curative surgery on Kreider at Centegra Hospital-McHenry in January 2017. Kreider said the surgery went well, and she won’t require any chemotherapy or radiation. After watching friends get diagnosed and go through intensive cancer treatments at advanced stages of the disease, she is grateful she had the screening that found her cancer early. “My screening saved me from all that,” Kreider said. “Smoking as many years as I had, it really was a miracle. I believe that.” The same day she had her surgery she stopped smoking for good.
