The Israel Gaza Border At Nativ HaAsara

A spectacular sunset over Jabaliya, Gaza City, as seen from Netiv HaAsara on the Israel-Gaza border. Netiv HaAsara, a moshav, is the closest Israeli community to the Gaza Strip. The southernmost point, where I shot the video from, is only 100 meters north of the armistice line. Beit Layiha, a municipality directly abutting Gaza City and north of Jabaliya, is immediately south of the wall. Erez, the only crossing with Gaza open to pedestrian traffic, is just a minute's drive to the south, where route 4 terminates. On the Gazan side of Erez there are two internal checkpoints: one operated by the PA and another by Hamas. The moshav was founded in 1982 by evacuees from (also) Netiv HaAsara, a former Israeli settlement in the Sinai desert. Given its proximity to Gaza, Netiv HaAsara has been targeted by just about every armament in Hamas' inventory and withstood an unsuccessful infiltration attempt. One rocket attack, in 2007, was sadly successful, taking the life of an Israeli-Brazilian worker. Prior to the installation of the large concrete fortifications, the moshav was frequently targeted by sniper fire emanating from the Gaza Strip. Since Hamas's rise to power, were it not for the fortification, the danger would be even more acute.    • ירי בשידור חי  - Live shooting during report   It's now very heavily protected by an extensive anti-sniper barricade just beyond its perimeter which was added in 2005. Next to the border barricade were accommodations for foreign workers which looked only dubiously habitable.
