Most Unique and Unusual! This was my 2nd visit in 5 years to the “Valley of the Names”, perhaps one of the most unusual and unique desert areas in the world. It all started during World War II, Soldiers training at Camp Pilot Knob (10 miles north of Yuma, AZ) began decorating a site they called “Graffiti Mesa,” by arranging black lava rocks to write out their names on the brown clayish soil. After the war, this tradition continued with the civilian population. Today nearly 2 square miles of land are decorated with an estimated 10,000 signatures, messages, and designs, all created out of rock arrangements. Although, this tradition started over 80 years ago, people still leave their special notes to loved ones today (which is OK with the Bureau of Land Management). This tradition that started with WW2 soldiers has a special place in my heart. My father, Sergeant Elbert F. Wright trained at these Army desert camps before heading off to fight the Nazis across North Africa, Italy, and finally Greece, where he met and married my mother. Should you visit the Valley of the Names, a 4-wheel high clearance vehicle is recommended.
