The climax of the imperialistic territorial disputes between Britain and France reached a boiling point in East Africa at 1898 when both armies met in Fashoda, thinking about the same goals. A French expedition to Fashoda on the White Nile sought to gain control of the Upper Nile river basin and thereby exclude Britain from Sudan. The French and a combined British-Egyptian force met on friendly terms however, but back in Europe it became a new war scare. The British held firm as both empires stood on the verge of war with heated rhetoric on both sides. Finally under heavy pressure, and realizing that the best option was to give the Sudanese region to the British due to lack of manpower and the possible necessity of allying with the British in case of a German invasion, the French decided to withdraw, ensuring Anglo-Egyptian control over the area and provoking a year later the bloody Second Boer War.
