Soumaya Ghannoushi, a writer and expert in Middle East politics, says Donald Trump’s conduct during the war reveals a leadership that treats violence as spectacle rather than responsibility. She points to his remarks about US bombers and strikes, where he praised their power, described explosions with enthusiasm, and even suggested further attacks could be carried out “just for fun”. Ghannoushi says that this language is not incidental but reflects a broader doctrine across the administration, where figures speak openly about “death and destruction” and removing restraints on American power. She argues this signals a shift away from law, diplomacy and post-war institutions towards a model driven by force and dominance. She highlights the role of key figures such as Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, whom she describes as lacking diplomatic experience yet central to negotiations, arguing that loyalty and proximity have replaced expertise. Citing diplomatic sources, she says negotiations with Iran were close to a deal, but were abandoned, and that some officials viewed those leading talks as aligned with Israeli priorities. Ghannoushi concludes that US foreign policy is no longer operating as a public trust but as a system shaped by personal networks and external influence. What emerges, she adds, is an administration driven by militarism and coercion, where diplomacy has been sidelined and the use of force has become both the method and the message.
