Texas vape ban empties shelves at local smoke shops

On Sept. 1, a new vape ban went into effect, emptying shelves at many smoke shops throughout town. Ariel Olvera, a cashier at Abilene Smoke Shop, told us this is impacting many businesses. "Obviously all of our shelves are empty, as you can tell," Olvera said. She said the vape ban has had a huge impact on many vape stores. "I know it's affected a lot of other smoke shops as well," Olvera said. "I know for sure there's been at least two confirmed that have, like, just officially closed their doors because it's just going to affect their business so much, and that's how they made their money." Senate Bill 2024 makes it illegal to sell certain e-cigarette products including devices that have cartoon-like fictional characters, products shaped or designed to look like other items, such as office supplies or toys, and products that are from China or other foreign countries. "So like Geek Bar, Fogger, stuff like that, those more popular names that everybody knew and that was really popular here," Olvera said. "Whenever we did have them, when we were able to sell them, those were the ones that would go very quickly." Olvera told us that this ban took a lot of products off their shelves, and because of that they have been getting a lot less business. "I think a lot of people are kind of just panicking and trying to figure out what they're going to do next or how they're going to keep their bills on, their bills paid, or how to keep employees in general," she said. "Because it doesn't just affect business people also affects people that were working for them, you know?" Olvera said, at this time, she’s not sure what they will be doing with the thousands of dollars of products they still had on the shelves and can no longer sell. "It really just makes it complicated for us," she said. "I guess I have to be more cautious of what we look for and what we can and can't sell."
