The fixture we use in this video is a germicidal UV-C fixture. That means it emits wavelengths of UV between 200 and 280 nanometers. This range is known to disinfect surfaces, but it can also damage skin and eyes if exposure occurs. It's extremely important to follow all safety guidelines when operating all UV products. We created this video because a lot of customers have recently asked us questions like, "How long does it take for UV products to disinfect an area?" or "How do I know if UV products are working?" Even more frequently, we're asked, "Do UV lights kill COVID-19?" Germicidal UV lamps and products are not a new concept. Healthcare applications have used them for decades. But they may be a relatively new option for other businesses and industries looking to protect employees and customers against COVID-19. Finding the right dose for UV products depends on two main factors: intensity and time. The higher the intensity, the less time it will take to kill pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Products with a lower intensity will take a longer time to get the same level of disinfection. A higher-power UV unit may enable you clean a space quicker than a low power unit. This is one of the reasons that healthcare settings tend to opt for high-power mobile units. The distance from the UV lamp is also important. Surfaces further away from the UV product will not get the same level of disinfection as surfaces close to the product. The dosimeter helps find the right UV dose. The yellow area in the middle of the dosimeter changes color based on intensity. If UV levels are intense enough to kill MRSA (or at least 50 mJ/cm2), the center will turn orange.
