Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Special Thanks to García Priego George Michael :) Niltze! Notoca Andy ¿Quen otitlahuili? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Classical Nahuatl language. Classical Nahuatl Language: Classical Nahuatl, or Nahuatlahtolli/Tēcpillàtōlli (referred to as "colonial Mexican" in some contexts), was the primary language of the Mexica Empire, belonging to the Southern Uto-Aztecan language family. Recognized for its agglutinative structure, it served not only as a spoken language but also as a literary and liturgical medium across Mesoamerica, particularly after the Spanish conquest. The Spanish Viceroyalty of New Spain preserved Classical Nahuatl as an official language, which facilitated communication with indigenous populations and helped spread Christianity. With a rich vocabulary adapted to express complex cultural and religious concepts, Classical Nahuatl remains influential, with certain modern Nahuatl dialects descending directly from it. The Nahua People: The Nahua people, primarily associated with the Mexica or Aztec civilization, held a significant cultural and political influence in Mesoamerica, particularly in the Valley of Mexico. Skilled in various arts, the Nahuas developed distinct dialects of Nahuatl, which evolved into Western and Eastern variants by 1000 AD, with further dialectal differences shaped by regional influences. Nahua society included a variety of roles from rulers to artisans, with distinct linguistic registers such as tēcpillàtōlli (noble language) and mācēhuallàtōlli (common speech). During the Spanish colonial period, their language and culture faced challenges but also adapted, integrating Spanish elements while preserving Nahua customs and values. Nahua Culture and Literature: Nahua culture flourished with a rich tradition of poetry, codices, and oral histories. They recorded sacred knowledge, historical events, and legends in amoxtli (books) on deer skin and amate paper, some of which survive today as renowned codices like the Fejérváry-Mayer and Borgia Codices. Classical Nahuatl literature included influential works from rulers and poets like Nezahualcóyotl and his son Nezahualpilli, whose poems encapsulated Nahua cosmology and ethics. Following Spanish colonization, Nahuatl literature expanded through the Latin alphabet, allowing the Nahuas to produce extensive prose, poetry, and catechisms in the language. Today, Classical Nahuatl is taught in various academic institutions as a vital historical language, comparable to Latin and Classical Greek in its cultural impact and preservation of ancient knowledge. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes.
