Cabrillo Festival VS20: The Battle for the Ballot

Composer Stacy Garrop's work, The Battle for the Ballot, was commissioned by the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music to commemorate the centenary of the 19th Amendment, and to celebrate the history of women’s suffrage in America. Receiving its world premiere during the Cabrillo Festival's first-ever virtual season in August 2020, the work features texts from seven American suffragettes–including Carrie Chapman Catt, Carrie W. Clifford, Jane Addams, Mary Church Terrell, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Susan B. Anthony, and Adella Hunt Logan, narrated by actor Julie James. In an artistic and technological feat achieved by percussionist Svet Stoyanov, The Battle for the Ballot features music director and conductor Cristian Macelaru and sixty members of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, all recorded from their homes around the world.
